How much was your first record advance and what did you buy with it? When we signed with EMI in 1976 we got £40,000 about £300,000 in today’s money between us in the band, plus wages of £25 a week and the rent on a flat paid for. Out of my share I got a Rickenbacker 4001 bass guitar that had been making eyes at me from a shop in Denmark Street. It was about £400. I used it on the Anarchy in the UK record and tour.
I’ve still got it now. Has there been a time in your life when you didn’t know how you were going to pay the bills? Oh yeah, lots of times. Before we got our record deal we were absolutely skint. We used to live in our rehearsal place in Denmark Street, and we were starving. Until we found out that the milk float didn’t only deliver milk at five o’clock in the morning, it also used to deliver bread and cheese. So that came in handy.
So did you steal food from milk floats back then? We put it to better use. It was an investment in punk rock. You famously quit the Sex Pistols in 1977. How much do you think that decision cost you?
Somewhere in the low millions. I couldn’t give you an exact figure. But it’s not something I get up in the morning and moan about.
It’s just what happened. At the time, money was the last thing on my mind. How much money did you earn from the Sex Pistols overall? My wage when I was in the band was only ever £25 a week. But then, a couple of years later, I started getting royalties. In 1979 I remember the letterbox rattled and in came a songwriting royalties cheque for £14,500.
And when we reformed in 1996 we did a reunion tour and I earned a lot from that. It worked out at £35,000 profit per person per show, and we did the best part of 100 shows, plus we’d get merchandising money and other things on top.
The Sex Pistols, 1976: Paul Cook, Steve Jones, Glen Matlock and Johnny Rotten Soho. Photo: Ray Stevenson / Rex Features Have you ever got into trouble with the taxman? Not long after I left the Pistols I was skint and living in a squat, and I got summoned to Bush House with my accountant to a meeting with the tax authorities. They wanted to look into my affairs. My accountant, who was Jewish, said to me: “Be very careful what you say, Glen.
These people are worse than the Gestapo.” But I didn’t owe them any money then. After that, though, I did come unstuck. You get used to the royalties coming in and then that slows.
In 1983 the taxman came knocking for £35,000 to £40,000, which I didn’t have. It was funny, actually.
The guy who was my tax officer – a nice old duffer of a bloke – his name was Mr Cheatem. He begged me to settle. I had to remortgage my flat in the end. But I paid off all the outstanding tax, and ever since then I’ve always been up to date with it. What’s the worst money mistake you’ve ever made? I shouldn’t have paid the taxman. Not then, not when it was inconvenient for me to do.
I think you should pay your tax, but I should have been harder nosed about it and paid it later. Then I wouldn’t have had a massive mortgage on my shoulders at punitive interest rates when I wasn’t working. Are you a spender or a saver?
A little bit of both. I have some money tucked away in case of emergencies and I’ve got a very small pension of about £100,000. But I’m focusing on my mortgage because I’ve decided the best thing I can do is own my property outright, and I'm pretty much almost there. I was more of a spender in my youth and I’ve learnt my lesson about that, because you don’t know what’s coming next. How much is your property worth? A couple of million quid. It’s just a three-bed maisonette in Little Venice in west London with a small garden.
I moved into it in 1995 and bought the place upstairs, then knocked it through and added more bedrooms. But I’m not a property speculator – I didn’t buy my flat as an investment, I bought it as somewhere to live. If you could change any aspect of the tax system, what would it be?
I’d create a special thing for artists and people of peculiar occupations where if they have one good payday only once ever in their lives, then they can spread their income out so the tax doesn’t all fall in one year. You can only ever do one farewell tour. How much did you earn last year? A good five-figure sum. Apart from property, what’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought?
A private education for my two sons at the Ryde School on the Isle of Wight. That’s cost me £20,000 a year in school fees. What’s the one indulgence you couldn’t live without?
I like a nice whistle every now and then – you know, a whistle and flute? Cockney rhyming slang for suit.
A mate of mine is a tailor called Sir Tom Baker in Soho and he does me a good deal on a nice bespoke handmade suit. I think the last one I got off him cost me about a grand. It’s money well spent when a suit fits you well. How do you prefer to pay for things – cash, or debit or credit card?
That way, you’ve got a record of what you pay for, but you don’t have to pay any interest. Glen Matlock performing in New York in 2012 Photo: Getty Images How do you tip? Quite well, by English standards. About 10pc to 12.5pc – I normally just round it up so you don’t have to do too much maths. How do you feel about investing in the stock market? I’ve done that and I’ve done all right so far.
But I don’t study the market and I’m not in a rush to invest any more than I already have. I don’t even know who my shares are with to be honest. I’ve got an all-encompassing selection, you know?
My financial adviser helped me with it. I went for medium risk. How much have you invested in stocks and shares so far?
Over £100,000 in some Peps and some Isas. I don’t sit there poring over them every day. I get a statement once a year and they look like they’re ticking over all right. What are your financial priorities for the next five or 10 years? To pay off my mortgage.
I want to keep that on track. That’s pretty much it. When will you retire? I don’t know that I will ever retire. I enjoy playing and I get invited to go to some really cool places.
It’s a very cheap way of seeing the world. If you had to sum up your attitude to money in a single sentence, what would you say? Respectful, these days. Following a run of critically acclaimed shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Glen Matlock is currently recording his forthcoming album with David Bowie guitarist Earl Slick.
While relocating, you will always find it difficult to take care of our expensive things. You need to treat them with utmost care for the safe transportation.
For the expensive pianos, you will have two choices for the relocation. You can do it on your own or you can hire experienced professionals. You cannot entrust your piano to anyone else other than the professional movers. An inexperienced person cannot be able to handle the heavy weight, large size, and delicate pianos. Professional Service vs DIY.
Professional piano movers are likely a better choice vs. DIY (if you can afford the services). Before taking any decision, first, you need to count the cost. You should always remember that pianos are delicate instruments that can be damaged easily without proper care.
Another thing is that its heavy weight requires the manpower and a right equipment to move safely. If you have an adequate manpower, equipment, and you are confident that you can perform this job without much difficulty and without damaging the body of the piano, then you can go ahead with your decision and do it on your own. Otherwise, you should hire professionals to take care of pianos during the relocation. You will have to pay the professionals for the relocation, but that will be worth spending if you want to make the process hassle-free. Professionals are skilled and experienced and they understand how to transport the delicate and the heavy-weight instruments safely. Besides, they know the proper techniques of lifting your upright, console, or the spinet pianos through the narrow doorways that you cannot do successfully without knowledge and experience.
They also know the proper way of disassembling, loading, and packing and that will be helpful for the safe transportation to the new destination. As the pianos come with the high cost, you need to be much more careful to avoid the damage during the relocation. The cost of the professional movers will be much less than the repairing and any replacement. If you do it on your own to avoid the moving cost, then you might be ended up spending more in the long run if some major parts get damaged during the process.
What will be the moving cost? The moving cost will mostly depend on the type, size, and weight of your piano. Some pianos will require the service of the two to three movers. They will come with all the preparations that include moving straps, specialized dolly, cinder blocks, skid boards, and the floor jacks. They will take care of everything to ensure a safe transportation from your old place to the destination. The cost will depend on the movers and your location. Followings are some estimations that can help you to take a decision.
The cost might vary depending on the location. The local movers might charge between $125- to$ 600 depending on your piano’s size, type, and the number of the stairs. For the long distance travel, you might need to spend all the way $2,000. For the overseas, it might cost $3,500. You should consider all the above facts before planning a piano relocation. You should hire the professionals to make the process safe and hassle-free. It might not be expected that a punk rock legend like might take a venture towards a mainstream entertainment outlet like NYC’s Broadway theater, but stranger things have happened in the world. Trust us, the longer you live, the stranger things might seem and the more things you will accomplish in life, whether its the minuscule or the massive.
One of those seemingly minuscule things is a punk rock legend going to see a Broadway show massively popular with teenage and pre-teenage girls. While “Wicked” is incredibly popular and has been a long standing top earner at the Theater District box-offices, its not been a show that’s all that very popular with Glen’s demographic, i.e. White, middle-aged, former rock stars. Nonetheless, here we are! Got Cheap Tickets, So Why Not? Wicked the Musical at the Gershwin Theater in NYC You might be asking yourself how this happened. Well, as a wise man once said, the answer to all your questions is money.
In this case, lack thereof. A friend came across some valuable tickets to see Wicked the Musical, and was unable to attend. Without the time to resell the tickets, they were given to us at a severe discount (really just a song, to be honest). Not wanted to waste valuable tickets or what might be an enjoyable experience, we decided to make a night of it.
Considering the fact that people line up outside the Gerswhin theater to get these tickets for cheap, who would we be to turn them down? Of course we could have found a family of tweens to bestow them upon, but we thought it would be possible to enjoy it, so why not? Did We Enjoy It? That’s hit or miss. On the one hand, its certainly not our cup of tea.
We aren’t really the musical theater type, even though we make our living making music. The singing and dancing really goes diametrically opposed to our own genre. So no, Wicked the Musical did not fit with our preconceived notions of an enjoyable experience, but then again I’ll have to say, it was quite an experience and a very impressive demonstration of talent. The actors and actresses, I don’t even know their names, but they were all extraordinarily talents in their portrayals of the characters. Furthermore, the story itself, which backtracks through a history of the Wizard of Oz, before Dorothy and all that, is actually quite intriguing.
I’m considering picking up a copy of which the show was based on. While I might not be into Broadway musicals all that much, I actually don’t despise fantasy novels at all. I wonder whether this would be enjoyable as well. Lessons Learned All in all, it was an experience I won’t regret, mainly because I never expected to experience it!
Take this as a tip, when something drops in your lap, take it up. The worst thing that could happen is that it will waste your time (which, be honest, you were probably going to do anyway). California ain’t so bad, is it?
In my life career as a musician, I have always wanted to explore the world much better and music has given me this opportunity something I’m truly grateful off. However, I have always had the urge to shift bases and live in a new place all together with the idea of meeting new people, exchanging ideas and making my music career a worldwide phenomenon. For starters, I’m an England native since birth something I’m truly proud off. As a musician, I have had the opportunity to visit different countries as well as explore the unmatched beauty that some of these countries posses. In the many countries I have visited and performed, USA has always being my best preferred destination perhaps due to the serene environment, security and the ever friendly people.
My last visit to the states came a few months ago when I had a performance in California. To be honest, this performance changed my life and there and then, I decided to relocate to the states with my primary destination being California. So; what made me decide to after spending years of my life in England? The answer is simple- California is beautiful. Located on the west-coast side of the United States, California is a dream destination for music lovers and musicians as well. California is home to the largest entertainment industry that is Hollywood.
As a musician, California was basically my ideal destination due to the fact that I had the opportunity to advance my music career as well as increase my chances of making it big in Hollywood. Moving from one place to another of course is not a decision you make overnight. You need to plan and plan again just to be sure that everything is in order. Having the right type of information can help you settle out properly in any given place. Before I decided to move out, I had to conduct a good research about California.
My main fear from the start was where I could find a good house to stay in. But as I found out later, getting a house in California is an easy task that only requires the right type of people with the right type of information.
![Glen matlock news Glen matlock news](/uploads/1/2/4/1/124187128/946247501.jpg)
A few connections from my family and friends made my settling easy. Once I found a place to stay, my second headache was to move my musical instruments. Though I could have still decided to move without them, the fact that they could set me back some few dollars to get the same instruments made me carry them with me.
I contacted a shipping company in England and they were glad to ship my instruments a day before my departure. To be honest, the transport company made my journey easy and all of my products arrived on time as scheduled with no hitches or glitches.
It didn’t take me long for me to settle in my new place and meet new friends. As we speak, I have met a number of world famous superstars and I have been booked for a number of shows in different towns in California and other states. Finally, my music dream of making it big in Hollywood is just a stone throw away. When on tour, it’s important to make sure you know the local language. If not, hire a translator! If you are a band that is planning on touring soon, then the services of a translator should be among the top priorities that you have. There are a lot of reasons as to why you need a translator and not just from someone who interprets languages to you.
The translator needs to be well versed in the language as well as what is to be expected of you in the country that you are touring. If it is a local or nationwide tour, then the need for a translator might not arise, but if you are going global, then a translator is a must in your priority list. Most promoters will provide them for you, but it is always important that you have one of your own, someone who you can rely on and trust. Below are some of the reasons as to why you need a translator when you are on tour especially in a new country that you are not familiar with the language. Language Barrier To make the tour a success, you need to be familiar with communicating with the fans that you are going to meet in that country.
Fans are the reason as to why you are there and if you cant effectively communicate with them, then there’s no use of touring at all. The fans might understand the lyrics to the songs that you have put out as a band, but they may not be familiar with your language well enough as to communicate with you. It is therefore of vital importance that you communicate with the fans especially if you have a meet and greet.
You need a translator with you at all times and one that is fluent in both languages and is there when you need him the most. Media Conferences There obviously has to be some media coverage for the tour, and you need a to make effectively the communication between you and the media possible. This will not only help you get better media coverage so that you do not embarrass yourselves, but it will also translate to more ticket sales. However, this has to be done with the right sort of translator that can interpret your answers to the media in a way that you yourself would say it. You do not need a translator that is just translating word for word and what you are trying to convey may not come out right. Making the Tour less Stressful This is a key part in the touring as it can take a toll on you as temperatures may rise because of miscommunication. A good translator will ensure that you are always up to speed with the places that you are going and the kind of people that you are meeting.
This will make it easier for the band to be prepared and which will mean that the chances of a mess are slim to none. This needs a translator that is experienced in this field and is ready to go the extra mile of making sure that you are always good on your tour. Brisbane has its own charm, quite different from its big brothers Sydney and Melbourne. The enchanting destination captivates the hearts of visiting tourists and makes them come here again and again.

Well, last night was amazing. I had a chance to hang out with Glen Matlock before last nights performance at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, N.J. I walked over to him, and said my name is Eliot Wien, and he recognized my name, and said “Hey, you’re the one that reviewed my CD on my website”.
He thanked me, and we talked about The Crystal Palace performance, and how John Lydon didn’t know the words to “My Way”, and I mentioned to him that I thought “Silver Machine” was a great song that The Pistols performed. He also shared with me that his biggest influence is Ronnie Laine from “The Faces”. I mentioned to him that Ian McLagan played at this exact place about a year ago. He wa impressed. The funny thing though was that he recognized my friend that was with me. My friend is Elektra and Apple Recording artist.
David’s an original punk from the late 60’s that had albums like “Have A Marijuana” & “The Pope Smokes Dope” produced by John Lennon. David was a part of The Elektra Records tour in the late 60’s that included MC5, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, and David Peel & The Lower East Side.
Glen said “David Peel – The Pope Smokes Dope!” & they shook hands and everyone took photos of both of them together. I will be forwarding pictures to you shortly. Other Sex Pistols like John Lydon are fans of David Peel. John had David Peel appear twice on his EYADA internet radio program. Well anyway, here’s the review from Last night’s show.
Glen Matlock & The Philistines at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, New Jersey – May 18, 2006 Here we stand in the town that Frank Sinatra was born and raised in – Hoboken, New Jersey. Yes the man that originally brought “My Way” to our attention. Well, tonight we have an original Sex Pistol visiting Frankie’s town to do it HIS WAY! This aint no concert, it’s Glen Matlock! He took the stage at about 10:00PM. This was a big return to the New York/New Jersey area for Glen Matlock. He didn’t waste any time, and hit the stage and never stopped.
Here’s the set list for last night’s performance: Yeh Right Hot Water Who’s Side are you on? (I’m Not Your) Steppin Stone Somewhere OK Kiddo Idiot Suck it and See On Something Burning Sound Piece of the Action White Knuckle Pretty Vacant After the show, Glen and the band hung around and was talking and taking pictures with fans and friends.
Trust me when I say, “Whenever there’s a Pistol in our area – The City is ALIVE!” – Eliot Wien, NYC.
Contents. Biography Matlock attended until 1974. He was the original bass player of the Sex Pistols, having been introduced to guitarist and drummer while working in, 's clothing boutique in London. He is credited as co-writer on 10 of the 12 songs appearing on the album. However, his overall contribution to these songs has been disputed: Jones said in a 2011 interview he was 'tired of Matlock's claims that he had co-written some of the punk icon's biggest tunes', stating that he himself had written as many songs as Matlock, whilst Matlock himself notes in his book that the band only wrote two songs after his departure. According to a 2014 interview, he played a big role in writing the songs that appeared on the album and Cook has stated that Matlock wrote most of the songs appearing on the album,.
Matlock left the band in late February 1977, with contemporary reports (given to news outlets by manager Malcolm McLaren) stating that he was 'thrown out' because he 'liked '. Although Matlock has said that one of his biggest influences is, the Beatles anecdote is fictional. A claim made at the time by Jones, that he thought it was bizarre that Matlock was 'always washing his feet', has also been misquoted and misinterpreted as the cause of Matlock's firing from the group. In his autobiography, I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol, Matlock stated that he left the band of his own volition as he was 'sick of all the bullshit'. In the 2000 documentary, the band members generally agree that there was tension between Matlock and Rotten, which Matlock suggests was exacerbated by 's attempts to pit the two men against each other. Matlock was replaced by, and went on to form, a band, with himself as bass guitarist and singer, (guitarist, singer and keyboard player), (guitarist and singer) and (drummer). After the Rich Kids he formed the Spectres with guitarist, and subsequently Mick Hanson, and then Hot Club in 1982 with guitarist and singer Steve Allen.

In his autobiography, claimed that Matlock worked on later Sex Pistols material (including their album ) as a paid (Jones played bass on the two songs recorded after Matlock's departure, with Vicious also contributing to the song 'Bodies'); however, Matlock denied this in his own book, stating that all but two of the songs appearing on the album had already been recorded as singles or b-sides before his departure. Music historian David Howard states unambiguously that Matlock did not perform on any of the Never Mind the Bollocks recording sessions.
Matlock later played bass with Vicious in the short-lived band. Matlock also played bass on the album and the album.
In the documentary about Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, Jones states that he believes the group would have made more albums if Matlock had stayed in the band and they hadn't done the TV interview.
